HISTORY OF LOMBARD BASEBALL

The Lombard Baseball League was established in 1954 by Dr. Milan Novak. In the 1970’s the league consisted of 10 divisions with 5 teams which included regular divisions of Major and Farm, and minor divisions of North, South and Central. In 1978, the league expanded to 12 divisions with each division consisting of around 65 players. As time went on, the league numbers grew significantly and Senior, Colt and Palomino divisions were added. The Travel Program consisted of only 12 year-olds and they traveled to Thillens Park in Chicago for 1 single elimination tournament. In the following years, Lombard Lincoln Mercury sponsored the program and travelling expanded to playing tournaments in Mount Prospect, Glen Ellyn and Franklin Park, but the program was still only for 12 year-olds. Over time, 10-14 year-old age groups were added to the travel program. In 1988, the league joined Pony baseball for an opportunity to play in their National Tournments with players ranging from 10-16 years old. In 2001, the Lombard Lightning Travel Program was established. Within a few years more age groups were added to the Lighting that ranged from 13 to 18 years old. In 2002, the 13U Lombard Lightning team won the Continental Amateur Baseball Associate (CABA) World Series. By 2004, the Lombard Baseball League in-house program consisted of 600+ players, the Lightning program had 75+ players and a part-time travel program was established with age groups of 8-14 called the Lombard Thunder.
